New bridge planned for McDaniel Avenue in Greenville

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) plans to build an improved bridge on McDaniel Avenue in Greenville, located between Cleveland Street and Ridgeland Drive.

This single span bridge repair and restoration project will replace a structurally deficient and weight restricted bridge over the Swamp Rabbit Trail and Reedy River with a new superstructure.  The new bridge will replace the existing steel beams, deck, and sidewalks all while matching the existing aesthetics with improved pedestrian safety railing and will no longer be weight restricted.  The Swamp Rabbit Trail will remain open through construction via a detour route adjacent to the bridge replacement.

SCDOT is replacing replace hundreds of deficient bridges across the state as part of the agency's 10-year Strategic Plan.

Due to the need to completely replace the bridge, the road will be closed while work is underway. The closure is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, and is anticipated to remain closed for approximately six months weather permitting.

Daily traffic averages 7,800 vehicles.

Due to the road closure the following detour will be in place:

  • Motorists traveling northbound on McDaniel Avenue will proceed to Cleveland Street (S-23-189), then onto Cleveland Street (S-23-76), then onto Ridgeland Drive north to McDaniel Avenue.

  • Motorists traveling southbound on McDaniel Avenue will proceed to Ridgeland Drive, then onto Cleveland Street (S-23-76), then onto Cleveland Street (S-23-189), then onto McDaniel Avenue south.McDaniel Avenue map.jpg
