Statewide Transit Bus Roadeo to be held in Myrtle Beach March 1

Bus operators from across the state will test their skills in the 2014 Statewide Transit Bus Roadeo competition in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, March 1.

The event is to be held from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the former Waccamaw Pottery Outlet Park, 3071 Waccamaw Boulevard, Myrtle Beach.

The annual event is sponsored by the Transportation Association of South Carolina (TASC), an organization that represents the public transportation industry in the state, in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).

Each year, TASC holds a conference for the purpose of training members, showcasing the latest in industry products and services available, and to provide opportunities for interaction with local, state and federal officials. TASC Conference attendees include transit agency staff, board members, and other transit partners and stakeholders.

The Roadeo competition includes a written test as well as skill demonstrations on a timed driving course. The course is designed to test every phase of driving that a bus operator encounters under normal driving situations. The course contains obstacles to test a driver's ability to negotiate left and right forward turns, left and right backing turn, passenger stops and judgment problems. The course requires an area of approximately 100,000 square feet, and is outlined with fluorescent orange highway cones.
