SCDOT hosts Public Information Meeting on Proposed Bridge Replacement in Abbeville County

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will hold a Public Information Meeting and is requesting public comments for a proposed bridge replacement in Abbeville County, S-33 (Cedar Springs St) over Long Cane Creek.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 5-7 PM at the Piedmont Technical College – Abbeville Campus located at 143 Hwy 72 W, Abbeville, SC 29620.  SCDOT staff will be available to discuss the concept design and project details, and members of the public will have an opportunity to provide written comments.

SCDOT proposes to replace the existing S-33 (Cedar Springs St) bridge structure on the same alignment as the existing bridge.  Traffic will be detoured during construction.  SCDOT estimates that construction could start in early 2023 and take approximately 18 months to complete.  The existing bridge is structurally deficient and load restricted.  More information can be found on the project website scdotgis.online/s33bridge.

The meeting will also serve to inform and solicit feedback from the public regarding potential impacts to the Long Cane Horse Trail, a recreational facility owned and maintained by the United States Forest Service  (USFS). It is proposed that the portion of the trail that crosses the bridge be closed during construction and reopened following construction. SCDOT proposes to make enhancements to the replacement bridge to make it safer for trail users.

Comments can be made at the public information meeting, on the project website, by emailing SCDOT Project Manager C.T. York at YorkCT@scdot.org, or by mailing a letter to C.T. York at SCDOT, 955 Park Street, P.O. Box 191, Columbia, SC 29201-3959.

Persons who have limited internet access or who have any questions about the project may contact SCDOT Project Manager C.T. York at 803-737-3122 or at YorkCT@scdot.org to request additional information. Persons with disabilities who may require special accommodations should contact Ms. Betty Gray at 803-737-1395.

This project is part of SCDOT’s 10 Year Strategic Plan that is focused on replacing aging bridges, resurfacing deteriorating roadways, making rural roads safer, and improving key portions of interstates across South Carolina after more than 30 years of deferred maintenance due to lack of funding.  SCDOT will replace or reinforce more than 465 structurally deficient bridges across the state by 2027.
