"Effective June 2017 the sampling requirements for 2500 psi Non-Structural Concrete will only include compressive strength specimens and joint material samples. The requirements for fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, cement and fly ash samples are no longer required. For acceptance of class 2500 non-structural concrete, only cylinders are required. Slump, temperature, and air are not required; however it is at the inspector's discretion whether or not to perform these field tests.

It is the inspector's responsibility to assure acceptable materials are being placed in accordance with SCDOT specifications. All specifications for air, slump, and temperature apply. The inspector should verify the contractor's mix by visual inspection. If the inspector questions the quality of the material, they should perform any necessary testing and/or reject the material.

Inspectors should always have all necessary equipment readily available to perform any of the field testing at any given time to confirm quality of material.
The inspection and preparation of cylinders must be performed by an SCDOT certified concrete technician, regardless of the class of concrete being placed.

Independent Assurance Testing: an IA evaluation for concrete is required on all federally funded projects regardless of class of concrete being placed. If an IA concrete evaluation is performed on class 2500 concrete, the field inspector must perform all required field tests (slump, temperature, air content, cylinder preparation, and sampling of fine and coarse aggregates).

**Preformed joint material samples are no longer required (effective 4/1/2019). Use materials found on SCDOT QPL 81 only.
